Many high schools across the United States are considering making the switch from textbooks to e-readers. However, the switch isn’t as easy as people might imagine. There are several major obstacles standing in the way of school districts all over the United States.

Here’s a look at some of the problems school districts are facing when trying to make the switch to e-reader textbooks.

Providing Students With E-Readers

The major problem facing school districts is the ability to equip all students with an e-reader. It is unrealistic to expect all students to have to go out and purchase an e-reader. However, many school districts do not have the financial ability to purchase thousands of e-readers for their students. This makes it difficult to decide if the cost of switching to an e-reader offers more benefits than purchasing multiple textbooks.

Unlimited Internet Access

Many e-readers have the ability to access the Internet via a 3G network. This means students could access a number of websites and their email throughout the school day. This type of distraction could prove destructive to a high school students learning environment.

School districts are faced with the tough challenge of having to protect students from the many inappropriate websites and emails they can receive throughout the day, and helping them use their e-readers for textbooks.

Providing the e-readers to students and limiting internet access is just two of the dozen or so problems school districts all over the United States are facing when trying to decide if they should make the switch to electronic textbooks.

Learning strategies have dramatically changed over the past 20 years. The Internet and new technologies have allowed students new ways to learn old material (and new material as well). Here are some modern ways that students learn.

Internet

The number one modern way to learn is online learning. Instead of just referencing books in research papers, many students are now referencing websites and online journals. Students also have the ability to search for articles in distinguished academic journals just by searching online databases through their school’s library. Many of these articles are available online so the student doesn’t even need to leave home to find research materials.

E-Readers

More and more textbooks are being made available electronically. Some publishers are including an electronic copy when a student purchases the hardcopy of the book while others are selling the book electronically, reducing the cost of the book because it doesn’t need to be printed or shipped. It also allows the publisher to correct mistakes in the book easily without having to print a new edition.

Online Colleges

Another way modern students are learning is through online colleges and universities. Lectures and class materials are made available online and students are able to complete the course without having to relocate to an area with a college and are able to work around their job schedule, allowing students to earn a bachelor degree at EarnMyDegree.com or other education sites.

With all the new, convenient ways for students to learn, it’s no wonder that more and more are going back to school.

With all the modern advances in technology, it comes as no surprise that there are also technological advances made in the classroom. One of these fancy new gadgets coming to a school near you is are interactive whiteboards, which basically are a mix of a traditional whiteboard with the ability to easily reload it as a multimedia program.

Image via Wikipedia

There are truly infinite possibilities with these, and teachers never have to worry again about whether they will run out of whiteboard markers. These interactive whiteboards are quite simple to use and are eco-friendly. There are no cables, cords, or even costly installation fees involved.

A key benefit of using interactive whiteboards are that collaboration is made easy. While teachers can still have fun being at the front of the classroom, this does not mean students will miss out at all. Students can also have this kind of whiteboard that allowing teachers and students to collaborate easier. When a teacher splits students up into groups, the students can also do team work using their individual whiteboards at the same time.

Gone are the days where teachers using a traditional whiteboard have to worry that they are going to run out of space when they write on the board. Although these new boards do have erasers, information can be saved, uploaded online, and shared.

Great leaps and bounds have been made in modern education. The benefits are clear when it comes to the online learning and resources. While electronic whiteboards are yet to be in every American classroom, you can be sure this will begin a whole new era in modern learning techniques.

Though many high school seniors envision themselves packing up their belongs and heading to college someplace far from their home, that decision may not be the right decision for all students. Still, that doesn’t mean they’ll have to miss out on getting a great education. More than 4 million students have registered with online colleges, and these schools continue to gain in popularity among tech-savvy students. There are many benefits that online colleges offer that traditional colleges simply can’t.

You’ll earn a high-quality education. The rise in popularity of online schools has also boosted the education quality. Any online college must meet accreditation standards from accrediting agencies. State and community colleges and universities are now offering online options.

You’ll have access to your classes from anywhere, at any time. For students who travel regularly or who don’t want to be tied down to a particular region, this is a major benefit of online courses. The course material is available 24 hours a day, so if you’re working a job or have other commitments, you can easily make your class schedule fit around your life.

Online colleges can be more affordable than traditional colleges. Students will save thousands in commuting costs, housing fees and textbook costs. Scholarships, loans and grants are also available to online college students

Online colleges will offer a no-intimidation classroom for shy students. A study by the National Survey of Student Engagement revealed that online students are more likely to participate in discussions about their major. If you’re the type of students who dislikes answering professors’ questions or speaking in front of a group, an online college can be your best option. You’ll still have the opportunity to make contributions through chat rooms, instant messages or emails.

The spread of E-Readers has made information and material reach a wider audience, but there are several areas in which E-Readers might not be able to achieve this effect. Here are the limitations of E-Readers in subject breadth.

Poetry
While some poetry is becoming available on E-Readers and in the form of E-Books, many current poets are hesitant to publish their work with E-Readers. The fact that poetry is already difficult to publish means that poets are very loyal to their publishers and agents. Additionally, the aesthetic qualities of poetry, such as type size and font, line length, and spatial arrangement on the page, make it difficult to move from a paper to an electronic format. Some poets do not like the idea that the reader will be able to control for these things, as it might remove some of the original artistic intent.

Experimental writing
Many newer experimental novels, graphic novels, and artistic books will also be difficult to move into the electronic format. The limited size of E-Readers and their customizability by the reader makes it difficult for these writers to convey the effects that they wanted to achieve in their work.

Textbooks and scholarly writing
Scholarly writing and textbooks are other areas that might prove difficult to be made available to E-Readers. Many of these books have detailed figures and graphs that would be hard to translate, and still others are in incredibly narrow niches.

Despite these current limitations, the continuous technological improvements to E-Readers might make them a popular format for writers in the near future.

Technology has become an integral part of the classroom, and it has even begun to spread to the laboratory. Lab simulations may save on time, increase efficiency, and help students find expected results, but there are several disadvantages as well. Here are the main pros and cons of lab simulations.

Pros:

Cost efficient
Lab simulations can often be much cheaper than multiple sets of traditional lab equipment that must be modified for each lab.

Time efficient
Similarly, simulations increase time efficiency by a large amount, removing the time it takes to setup and clean up. Simulations can also improve safety by removing risks of equipment malfunction during lab.

Desired results can be easily achieved
Common issues with equipment will be avoided, and students will be more likely to gather the expected data for the experiment.

Cons:

Decreased importance of the scientific method
With a lab simulation, labs are conducted in a more step-by-step manner, rather than through observation, hypothesis, and experimentation. Students often miss out on all of the processes of scientific observation.

Lack of tactical skills teaching
The fact that the program is already set up means that students will not have to learn how to create the experimental setup themselves. If, for example, the lab involves examining a neuron, students will not be able to see or experiment with nerve tissue, and they will not be learning the tactical skills necessary to examine this tissue.

Not as realistic
Lab simulations simply aren’t as realistic as conducting a real experiment. Students can easily pick up on the fact that the data is stored, which can alter their learning experience.

Creating a class blog is an innovative way to spread learning outside the classroom. Not only will it allow students and instructors to read and comment on each other’s posts, but it will also be a way for the class to connect with resources on the internet. Here are some situations where a class blog would be beneficial.

Seminars and humanities classes
Many seminars and humanities classes can benefit from creating a class blog, as it allows students to discuss concepts and contribute their thoughts outside of the classroom. Writing short blog entries and commenting on other students’ entries can teach students to improve their debating skills. Additionally, it will allow less outspoken class members to be on equal footing with the rest of the class when it comes to participation.

Ongoing class projects
For ongoing class projects, a class blog can serve as a platform to enable students to remain in communication with each other. Similarly, for younger classes, parents, friends, and family members can follow the class’s progress as they work their way through the project.

Research papers and projects
Lastly, for classes conducting research projects, a class blog can be a great way for students and instructors to link to interesting sources that they have found. This will help students come up with new research topic ideas, find helpful online sources, and contribute their findings as well.

Creating a class blog is both simple to do and free of cost, and it will give students the benefit of broadening their learning experience.

According to a study conducted by the Internet World Stats, 28.7% of the world’s population comprises of Internet users. Just as the screwdriver eventually paved way for the electric drill, improvisations in technology have led to several changes in the way people live. While a part of the population might not believe in the enhancements it has brought along, a large number is convinced that improvements in technology have only produced benefits.
Some of the most compelling results of technology have been realized in the fields of literacy and communication. Its positive influence is scalable in terms of the evident increase in the wealth of knowledge and resources.
Technology: Advancing Efficacy
The advances in technology have increasingly been used to facilitate learning and are often used as the means for promoting literacy. Various online tools such as visual aids, eBooks, word processors, and other technological resources are easily available and accessible to allow the smooth flow of information and encourage self-education.
The wealth of written material and published content available on the Internet is for one and all to discover and use. Prose has, in fact, attained a different level of understanding and usability due to the advances in the computer era. People across the globe are using various means such as Email, text messaging, chat windows, discussion forums, blogs, social networking tools and even Internet search – taking writing to a completely new dimension.
Technology: Advancing Literacy
The advances in technology have certainly brought about a radical change in the traditional classroom teaching methods. They have been seen to effectively enhance the existing teaching methods. Email, online chat, eBooks and more make teaching much more interactive, resulting in perhaps a larger amount of creativity. These interactive tools are mostly used by educational systems online like earnmydegree.com. They prove to be very effective tools for both students and teachers.
Technology is a tool that has opened up a gamut of possibilities, especially in the areas of literacy and communication. Easily available resources give both teaching and learning a brand new appeal.

The spread of E-Readers and E-Books has created some concern among the writing community. While these aspects of technology can be highly beneficial for learning, some writers are hesitant to publish their work in the form of E-Books or make their work available to those with E-Readers. Here are some negative implications of this technology for the writing world.

No place for publishers or agents
Many writers remain loyal to their publishers and agents, who are facing a number of challenges associated with online publishing. Some writers will not consider leaving their publishing organization or agent to submit work in an online format, even if the potential for earnings is greater.

Limited input in design
Poets and experimental writers are concerned with the increasing limitations when it comes to artistic and visual design of their work. E-Readers often have features in which the reader can adjust the font, type size, and even color of the work, which can limit the ability of the author to communicate the artistic effects he or she wanted to achieve.

Decreased ability to protect work
The spread of online books has made it easier for individuals to obtain free texts, decreasing the income generated for the authors and publishers. The concept of ownership is becoming increasingly blurry, worrying some writers, agents, and publishers.

Despite these issues, many writers are embracing the freedom that goes along with publishing their work online; only time will tell what actions writers will take in response to the spread of reading technology.

The spread of Wi-Fi technology to the classroom has both benefited and limited learning. While there are numerous advantages to internet and laptop use during class, internet distractions can be an unfortunately common occurrence in some classes. Here are several tips for reducing internet distractions among students.

Don’t allow headphones
Headphones during class will be used to listen to music or watch videos online. Allowing them will almost definitely encourage students to cave into internet distractions. Videos are some of the worst distractions, as they can distract other students sitting within view of the laptop screen. By forbidding headphone use, instructors can help limit the likelihood of video distractions during class.

Require Wi-Fi to be turned off at times
Another rule to reduce internet distractions is to require Wi-Fi technology to be turned off during class. This will still allow students to use their laptops for note taking, but it will prevent them from logging into Facebook or surfing the net during class.

Engage student participation
Walking around the classroom, soliciting student input during lectures, and posing questions to the class are all ways to encourage students to participate and pay attention in class. If students are actively engaged, then they are much less likely to turn towards internet distractions to alleviate boredom.

Be clear about the rules
On the first day of any class, instructors should be prepared to provide an overview of the course as well as clear expectations for student behavior during class. Internet use should be covered during this time, and instructors should clearly communicate the rules for when the internet can and cannot be used. This will reduce the temptation for students to use the internet for personal purposes during class.

These strategies can help ensure that the internet is used for educational purposes during class. Students will be better able to focus with a decreased risk of distraction.

Some people think that without a degree, you don’t have much of a future. Honestly, though, there are plenty of people who never got one who have done fine. Think of Bill Gates, Michael Dell, Oprah Winfrey, and a whole host of other people throughout history. If Andrew Carnegie had gotten his degree, he may not have had time to basically create the American steel industry. It isn’t every day when a person can say, “Yeah, that industry pretty much only exists because I built it.” However, most of the people in the world are not good enough at business to actually create entire industries. People like Bill Gates, John Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie only come around so often.

For most of the world’s population, just getting a great job working in one of these great companies (or building a company that works on the technologies these industrial titans founded) is about the best one can do. And in order to get further in those kinds of pursuits (as well as life in general), you need to consider taking your education to another level. A master’s degree may yet be in your future. But of course, not just anybody can simply walk up and ask a university to let them in.

Technically you could do that, but you still have to take entrance examinations and be accepted before much will come of it. This is why some wise person (who is probably now wealthy) invented GMAT class online. Without these kinds of courses, getting into a good MBA program (and getting further in life) would be even more difficult than it already is. And since it isn’t exactly easy on its best day, we should all be pretty grateful that we have these options to make it a little bit less of an ordeal.

Twitter doesn’t have to be all about celebrity gossip! Creating a class Twitter account can help students connect course concepts to the wider world through a simple format, and it can get them thinking about the class material as they’re logging into social networking sites at home or at the library.

Benefits of class Twitter accounts
Twitter helps connect both students and instructors to the rest of the world. Not only can they make connections with other classes, organizations, or academic institutions, but they can also discover new online resources that pertain to the class. Often, classes using Twitter will discover new articles or websites that can be incorporated into the course syllabus the following year. Instructors can also use Twitter to receive the most up-to-date information on their subject.

Twitter assignments
Twitter makes it easy to create short, relevant assignments for students. Requiring one to two Tweets per week from each student is a good place to start. Many times, this will simply involve posting a link to another article, or posing a question to the rest of the class. From there, students can look into other interesting users to follow, leading them to more information. The convenience of these assignments will likely be a huge benefit to students, as they will be able to complete the assignment from virtually anywhere–including on their cell phones. The short character limit forces students to be concise; this will limit the amount of stress experienced and increase the time that they spend researching when compared to the time they spend writing.

Twitter accounts can be a great way for one class to reach new information, or even connect with another class following a similar educational format. Signing up is simple and can be done in class, allowing the students to help pick the name of the account.

The negative effects of segregation, seen in its various manifestations, have devastated local education and school zones in certain areas. White flight and gentrification, among others, are specific examples of the mechanisms that can work in this manner. Follow along as these elements are approached in search of positive ways to fight them.

A couple of these terms serve as examples of segregation, in some form. Gentrification is seen where wealthier people acquire property in low-income areas, which can have negative effects on other individuals. White flight refers to the moving out of Caucasians when minority population increases in an area.

The effects can undermine the area in various ways. Specifically in regards to local education, changes in the socioeconomic status of the population can leave out certain population areas. For instance, in cases of gentrification, lower-income individuals can become stressed – in a number of senses, including economically – causing negative effects.

In any of these types of segregation, a common factor is that the local school district is unable to keep a diverse population. When certain populations dwindle as a result of these effects, local education suffers. Without a diverse population, the system can become segregated, which gives way to a number of difficulties in the school district.

Proper planning can significantly help. Charter schools, school choice, and planning in the area (to avoid these sociological concepts) can positively affect the local school area. As seen in a Mesa property management firm, these types of companies can help in the design and operations of a school, which can help maintain a diverse school population.

With the dangerous consequences of segregated areas, school systems and other elements of the community must take action. The aforementioned forces can certainly help to maintain a diverse and healthy population and a good school environment.

While laptops are incredibly beneficial to many classes at the high school and college level, there are a few disadvantages to widespread laptop use in class. Here are the main issues with this practice.

Distractions
Wireless internet use can be one of the leading causes of distractions with laptop use during class. Students who are checking their email, logging into social networking sites, or accessing work from other classes will have trouble paying attention and taking effective notes. Additionally, laptops give students the opportunity to write assignments for other classes while appearing to take notes for the class they are attending at the time. Many students will not be able to overcome these distractions for effective learning.

Availability
Not every student has a laptop, and not every student can always bring his or her laptop to class on any given day. If an instructor plans for laptop use during class, the simple lack of availability of student laptops could be a problem. While this can be partially fixed by having students share, that could lead to additional problems if students are not interested.

Note taking limitations
Sometimes laptops are not as convenient for certain types of notes. Diagrams, drawings, and graphs, for example, can be easily created or copied from the blackboard into a notebook; however, laptops make this feat somewhat difficult for students to accomplish if they’re used to taking notes on a word processor instead. Students in certain types of science classes that require a fair amount of drawing, such as biology or physics, might not be able to take adequate notes in class by using a laptop. While certain computer programs might help, they can be expensive or difficult to find at times.

If these potential disadvantages of laptop use can be avoided, then students will be able to largely benefit from bringing their laptops to class.

Laptop use has become a common occurrence in most college level classes, and it’s even beginning to appear in high school classes. Here are some of the benefits of allowing and promoting the use of laptops during class to improve learning.

Convenience for the students and instructors
Laptops not only offer a faster method of note taking, but also a more convenient method for integrating and storing these notes. Students can type much faster than they can write, so taking notes in a word processor can allow them to record more information at faster speeds, improving their studying capabilities and the amount of material they are able to learn from the course. Similarly, instructors can take advantage of this increased speed and convenience as they lead their classes, providing more information to the students, or spending more time reviewing the same information.

Integration with PowerPoint presentations
Laptops also allow for easy integration with PowerPoint presentations and lectures, as many students are now able to download the PowerPoint document directly onto their laptop during class. This allows them to take notes on or near the document, and read fine print more easily than on a large screen. Taking notes on the slides also helps students organize their thoughts and questions based on where they are in the lecture; they can note any questions on the particular slide.

Interactive learning with computer programs
Many instructors are now encouraging laptop usage during their classes, as it allows them to teach with new programs. They can hold tutorials to demonstrate how to use these programs, as well as implement in-class learning activities using these programs on the student laptops. This feature is incredibly helpful for math and science classes, as well as engineering classes, in which students will need to build or observe structures in three dimensions.

These advantages of laptop use during class can help students more fully take advantage of their education if they are able to avoid the common distractions associated with laptop use. Instructors can also benefit from laptops, as they can expand their lectures to include interactive technology.

Since digital archiving is a relatively new practice, there has not yet been an established system for it; instead, each library, school, and academic institution has a different method for digital storage. The lack of clear protocol or direction could create problems, as digital information stored in one manner might not be readily available for an individual at a different institution that uses a different storage method. This problem is being witnessed at various libraries, each of which uses a different method–or avoids digital storage altogether until enough funds are raised to devise an archiving system.

Mixed storage media
Another recurring issue with digital archiving is the wide range of storage media being submitted. While some information is stored on CDs, other information is being submitted in the form of DVDs, flash drives, floppy disks, or even computer hard drives themselves. This makes it incredibly difficult to integrate all of the information on one storage system, especially because newer computers might not be able to read the older floppy disks. Additionally, older computers might not have internet access or the same word processing programs, limiting the ability to translate the archives into another format.

Physical decay
Physical storage media, such as floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs, actually decays at a much faster rate than paper archives. This could create problems in later years if libraries and universities keep their digital records on these forms of storage. Given the current problems with integrating all of the different types of information storage, many educational institutions are, in fact, keeping the physical storage for the time being.

Although these problems might remain in existence for some time, progress is being made towards developing a clearer methodology for digital storage.

As technology improves, many industries experience improvements as well. The fields of learning, education, and research are also changing due to improvements in technologies. The ways that students research their papers have changed now that the Internet provides a myriad of new resources for information, for example. Technology has changed and continues to change the face of education as we know it, and this is really only the beginning. As technology sees improvements, education as a whole is only going to see vast improvements as well.

The surge in online degree programs from sites like elearners.com is another example of how technology has greatly changed the education landscape. It’s a phenomenon how more and more people are relying on the internet for all aspects of their education, not only when researching topics for assignments but also for their actual education as well. There are many things to consider when it comes to how technology impacts education though. For example, the Internet has made plagiarism easier, and so instructors must keep up with the changing face of education technology in order to keep students honest.

For the most part, technology is definitely benefiting learning. Now that every student has such a vast array of resources at his or her disposal, students can find the things that they are interested in at any moment and can learn about any topic that they are interested in on their own time. Online references come in many different styles and types, and so there is no shortage of information available for students to peruse. The Internet has made it significantly easier for students of all ages to find the information that they need, whether they need it for a school assignment, a paper, or personal interests. The Internet has made learning easier and even more enjoyable in a wide variety of ways.

With the growing number of online resources, it’s becoming increasingly simple for instructors to check student work for plagiarism. By having students submit their work online, instructors can encourage original research and avoid plagiarism in their class.

Clear Communication to Students
While teachers may catch more plagiarism by not communicating to the students that an online plagiarism checker will be used, the ultimate goal of these programs is often to limit the incidence of plagiarism. Clear communication to the students is important, as it will make them completely aware of the consequences of plagiarism, prompting them to devote enough time to the assignment and to avoid any type of plagiarism. Communicating the intention to use a plagiarism checker will ultimately benefit both the teacher and students, decrease the likelihood of plagiarism, and increase awareness of accidental plagiarism when students do not exercise enough caution when paraphrasing from their sources.

Student Plagiarism Checkers
There are several student plagiarism checkers available online that students can use to test their papers before submitting them. These do not always use the same database as the full plagiarism checkers for teachers, and as a result, they are best for checking the possibility of accidental plagiarism from online sources.

Resources for Teachers
Turnitin.com and PlagiarismDetect.com are popular resources with large databases that instructors can use for a small fee. There is also a large selection of free plagiarism checkers available for instructors; however, these detectors are also available to students. Many universities and colleges also offer their own plagiarism detection software and student paper databases, limiting the cost and promoting accurate detection.

Not only will online plagiarism resources make it easy to check for plagiarism, but their presence will also encourage students to submit original work, as well as avoid paraphrasing too closely from their research sources.

Online paper submission has become increasingly common for classes at all levels, as it promotes unique, original writing and offers a convenient platform for both students and instructors. Here are the main benefits of using online paper submission.

Reduction in Plagiarism
Collecting papers through an online platform makes it easy to submit them to plagiarism detection sites. As a result, students who know that they will be turning a paper in online are much less likely to plagiarize material, which increases the quality of their papers.

Ease for the Student
Many students do not own printers, and printing at the library can be costly and inconvenient late at night. Online paper submission gives students the ease and flexibility to submit their papers on their own time from their own computers, without having to worry about printing issues.

Convenience for the Instructor
Instructors have also found that collecting papers online offers considerable convenience. Not only does it allow teachers to access papers easily at any time and from any location, but it also allows them to effectively enforce deadlines. Online submissions can be controlled so that the platform closes at the time of the deadline, creating a fair way to ensure on-time submissions. Moreover, instructors are able to download the documents and review the font size, margins, and word count to make the grading process fairer for all students.

Benefit to the Environment
Online submissions reduce unnecessary paper consumption and provide another way for schools to stay environmentally friendly.

Low Cost
Many universities and colleges offer either free or subsidized online platforms for paper submission. The low cost for plagiarism websites and software make this technology available for a wide range of classes.

Database Storage
Plagiarism websites as well as universities will sometimes store student papers to check for plagiarism in future years. Moreover, some of the papers can be made available to other students in future years for more information about certain research topics.

While some instructors still prefer reviewing hard copies of papers, many enjoy the benefits of collecting and reading student assignments online.

PowerPoints have been widely used for lectures and presentations, but increasing numbers of students are also beginning to use these PowerPoints as study tools for their next exam. Instructors can implement a few basic techniques to help improve the quality of their PowerPoint presentations or lectures, while transforming them into useful study guides for their students.

Posting the PowerPoint Online
Teachers often post their class PowerPoint presentations online either before or after the lecture. This allows students to download the documents to take notes on during class or to review after class. Posting the presentation online before class can be an effective study method if some sections are intentionally left blank; students must pay attention in class and take adequate notes to fill in these blanks, which usually contain the most important information of the lecture. In contrast, posting the notes online after class, including all of the key points, can provide a useful review guide for students.

Including Videos and Links
One of the benefits of PowerPoint presentations is that they can easily incorporate other learning media, such as videos, links to other sites, and interactive programs. While beneficial in class, often times these programs and embedded videos get lost when the PowerPoint notes get posted online, preventing students from reviewing them after class. Instructors can improve this situation by including the actual hyperlinks in the notes and by posting the videos as separate attachments online.

Designing the Slides to be User-Friendly
Cramming in too much text into a single slide, not including enough relevant pictures and figures, or not including important information in the slides can both harm the presentation itself and the PowerPoint’s effectiveness as a study tool for students. Leaving enough space in the margins will create a more visually appealing presentation, in addition to giving students room to take extra notes. Similarly, including the key points will provide students with a quick, basic review of the main concepts.

PowerPoints are incredibly versatile, and by implementing these three strategies, teachers can improve the quality of their PowerPoints and create more effective study materials for their students.

The first eReader to have a full color display and hold nearly 268000 colors is none other than Fujitsu FLEPia. This amazing application is restricted for sales to other countries other than Japan. A number of similar eReaders display a wide spectrum of colors on the screen of the application.

Apple iPad
The Apple iPad’s touch LCD display is similar to that seen in HDTVs. The touch screen tablet boasts of full browsing capability and it can hold nearly 14,000 applications. The amazing pixel resolution facilitates visibility of high quality and colorful images. The iPad comes with a backlid IPS panel display integrated with LED technology.

Alex Reader
The Alex reader launched by Spring Design, similar to the resemblance of Barnes& Noble nook has a dual screen display. Alex boasts of holding a majestic six inch EPD screen. On the second screen which features full browsing capability allows the users to watch videos and photos.

Qualcomm Mirasol
A new display technology known as IMOD is integrated in Qualcomm Mirasol. Being more efficient than LCDs, IMOD facilities color pictures to glisten or shine like the glow seen in the wings of butterflies. Even under direct sunlight, the reflective feature of IMODs allows the users to read easily.

Asus Budget and Premium eReaders
This looks like an open book. The dual LCD screen allows the users to browse on one screen and have the pleasure of reading books on the other screen. Amazing features like web cam, built in speaker and Skype can be witnessed in this version.

More useful eReader applications with extensive features will be launched during the year 2011. It’s possible for the users to witness full video capabilities along with web browsing facility. The e-Readers can be used like a mini PC, where the pages can be scrolled up and down.

Kindle is the latest platform that Amazon is taking advantage of, to reach a wider range of audience. With the launch of Kindle Apps for Mac, iPhone, iPod, PC, Blackberry and iPad, Amazon is creating easier access to books.
Features
Offering unique shopping benefits among platforms, Kindle App provides access to paid content as well as books in the Kindle Store that are in the public domain. Amazon’s Whispersync technology, the app’s Kindle friendly reading devices are just some of the unique features.
Book reviews allowed entail sampling the opening chapter to help customers know whether to purchase or not. Amazon’s Whispernet technology allows for eBooks to download to one’s device wirelessly.
Readers can read at their own comfort level by changing the mode to either portrait or landscape, and editing font sizes.
Applications for your Device
If you do not have a Kindle eReader, Amazon offers you a Kindle reading app that would be compatible with your device:
iPhone -The application needs the device to be using iPhone 3.0 OS.
iPod -The same requirements as that of iPhone is required.
PC – A PC with 500MHz or AMD Processor or faster is required.
Blackberry – Blackberry Storm 9530, Storm 9550, Tour 9630, Bold 9000, Bold 9700, Curve 8520, and Curve 8900 are compatible models.
Mac -Mac OS X 10.5 or higher is required to run the app.
iPad -Read more than 750,000 Kindle books on the Kindle for iPad app.
The Pros and Cons of Kindle Reading App
In comparison with the Kindle eReader, the features related to reading are less in the Kindle App for iPhone, iPod, and other devices.
Due to the LCD screens, battery life is short and readability under sunlight reduced. The advantages include display of full color information in a book, and touch responsive screens, except in the case of Mac and PC.
Moreover, the Kindle Apps make possible access to Kindle books from many devices.

The launch of the iPad, however, raises the debate of whether or not it can create such a niche for itself in the challenging market.
Pros of the iPad
Known for producing quality hardware, Apple has released one of its most admirable products so far. Some of the praiseworthy features include:
- Apps from the Apps Store can be easily downloaded from iTunes for use on the iPad.
- Portability is the USP of the iPad. It is small enough to carry around, an large enough to use in the office and home. Advantages over the iPhone include a bigger screen for viewing.
- iBooks give the iPad the edge over its competitors with the release of Kindle apps, making download of iBooks easy and comfortable.
- Movies are made more readily available through the Netflix app.
Cons of the iPad
- Webcam unavailability, with a “Camera Connection Kit” as a substitute, works highly against the iPad.
-Flash is not supported by the iPad, making it counter-productive for a device built for video.
- No USB ports make the product further incompatible, with users having to dish out an additional $30 for installing the kit.
- No GPS app is available on the portable device.
- Apps have not been built not for the iPad, but for the iPhone, causing their appearance to be non-user friendly.
-Price is, much higher than the competition.
Though the iPad was launched amid a lot of expectation and scope for potential, it faces an uncertain future in the market. It may not turn out to be such a huge hit, after all, with its high price tag and tendency for non-compatible features.

The huge amount of electronic or other devices are used in work or daily life. In one way or another they have effect on human health, especially if they are not ergonomic. Ergonomics is a science field that investigates the ways to design workplace to fit the user. Non-ergonomic environment or devices can lead to back pain, eye and neck strain and other stress injuries. It is necessary to estimate your workplace and devices you are using from ergonomic viewpoint.
In many workplaces a computer is very popular device, so it must be ergonomic. In April 2010 Apple Inc released the iPad, which became very popular. There is no need to tell how important is to evaluate this product from viewpoint of ergonomics.

Lack of ergonomics in iPad
The iPad as tablet PC device is supposed to be held by hand in extend periods of time. Estimating its weight, which is 1.5 pounds, it can be truly said that after some time it may cause hand strain. There are more ergonomic similar devices in the market, for example Amazon Kindle, which weighs 0.63 pounds. The measurements of the iPad are 10 inches in height and 7.5 inches in width. It is hard to hold this device in hand for long periods of time.
The iPad was introduced as a platform for audio and visual media. It is supposed that movies should be watched while holding it in hand which may cause arm strain. If iPad is positioned on the lap, looking down may cause eye strain and neck strain. It is impossible to work with iPad laid flat on surface, because bending the back for long amount of time will cause back pain and other stress injuries.
The iPad has no keyboard included. It is optimized to use a computer pen (stylus) or a finger. This causes problems in typing.

Autism is neural development disorder that causes problems such as lack of social interaction and communication. Persons with this disorder have repetitive and restricted behavior. In many cases people with autism cannot understand verbal communications, so they are taught to speak using various materials, devices and drawings. There are many methods of autism therapies that help to increase communication skills.

Using PECS to Communicate
PECS is an acronym for Picture Exchange Communication System. This system is used to communicate with children that have autism or other special needs. The system works through pictures. A person who has a disorder touches or gives pictures to his partner. The pictures illustrate actions or things, that disordered person wants to say. After some time these pictures can be used to form a sentences of phrases. The picture language is very important for persons, who have problems with verbal communication. It helps them to learn language.

Using New Technologies
The iPad was released by Apple Inc. in 2010. The iPad is a tablet PC with 9.7 inch screen. It weighs 1.5 pounds and can be easily used because it has multi-touch screen and wide viewing angle. Because it is very light and thick, the iPad is easy to carry and use even for children.
The iPad uses iMean technology. This technology transfers the pad into a huge visible keyboard. It is very easy to type using this technology because of the touch screen capabilities. Also this technology suggest a dictionary, that gives you words you may want to say using the first letters or other parts of the words. Because of these features this technology can be applied to autism therapies. However, this is a new technology and all advantages and disadvantages are not known. The iMean was created by M.Begmann and R.M.Miller. Despite the fact that Bergmann’s son has autistic disorder, this technology must be used very carefully.

The Amazon Kindle was a new wave in eBook market allowing consumers to read eBooks and magazines easily. There are many applications for multifunctional devices such as computers, cell phones and tablets that allow user to enjoy reading eBooks without purchasing the Kindle. The new application was introduced to fit this group. The new application for the iPhone cell phones tries to imitate Amazon’s Kindle. On the one hand, this is reasonable step, because it allows iPhone users to read books in their cell phones using Kindle environment. On the other hand, this application may disappoint some Kindle fans because of the lack of some features.
Kindle in your iPhone?
The iPhone Kindle application can be downloaded free for users that have Amazon account. There are some features that Kindle application differs from original Kindle. Some magazines cannot be read using it. Also there are problems in reading blogs and newspapers. This may disappoint some Kindle user. However, despite this, the Kindle application for iPhone is fully functional.
The iPhone Kindle application is very easy to use. Firstly you must download it using your Amazon’s account. The download is free. After you have downloaded and put application, it will show you all the books you have archived. Also it synchronizes with kindle stores and allows buying eBooks. This application provides all the features needed for reading. It allows section jumps, scrolling and bookmarking. These features make reading more comfortable and are important for every reader.
There are many applications made for iPhone to read eBooks. It cannot be said that Kindle application is very special or has many new features. Some users claim that it has too many features. Anyway, the release of new application always causes many discussions. It can be said truly, that this application is worth trying, especially for Kindle user.

Huge amount of information can be found on the Internet. Reading digital books is not only a new fashion but also a necessity. Storing huge libraries of DRM free or other digital books can cause some problems. So many electronic devices have multiple features included that can help handle this problem. The iPad Touch an iPhones can be used as eBook readers. A free eBook reader application Stanza by Lexcycle can help to transform iPhone or iPad into eBook reader. Stanza is very flexible and extremely user friendly application.
Read eBooks with Stanza
Stanza allows iPad Touch and iPhone user’s download, store and organize many eBooks. There are features that allow user to organize their books, store and manage them or buy the new ones. User’s background can be customized depending on individual needs. There are possibilities to change background color, font size, foreground color. This helps to create the most user friendly environment possible.
Stanza is compatible with the most popular ePub and eReader formats, also it supports txt files. Many languages can be used with Stanza also. Stanza can be used as eBooks formats converter. This feature is extremely useful for users, who have big libraries of books. The main problem is that Stanza is only compatible with DRM format used on eReader. Other DRM formats are not supported, so Kindle books or others cannot be read. On the other hand, if only DRM free eBooks are needed, Stanza application is a good solution.
Stanza can be downloaded from iTunes application store for free. The only restriction is that user must be registered on iTunes. Stanza can be downloaded directly to iPad or iPhone device. If you do not have a specialized eBook reader, I suggest you to try Stanza application despite the fact that many books are not compatible with it.

The main part of consumer electronics is oriented to teenagers or adults. It is very hard to imagine our children using expensive devices. On the other hand, entrusting expensive devices to children can increase their self estimation and can help to attract them to learning. The main idea is that ebook Reader can be used in classes.
Use Sony PRS-600 reader in classes
There are many free books for classrooms on the Internet. At the moment the teachers make copies and use them in the classes. These expenses can be reduced by using ebook readers. Sony Reader PRS-600 can easily help to reduce library costs in classes. This reader is very easy to use even for children. It has slots for SD card and Memory Stick, so there is no need of using computer. Teacher can easily write appropriate books in classroom. Students can share their books and read as much as they want.
Another great feature about Sony Reader is dictionary. The New Oxford American Dictionary page can be accessed by two taps on the unknown word. All the information about that word appear, so there is no need in using paper dictionaries. This is great feature for learning.
PRS-600 has mp3 player included. The player works only with headphones. Each person can work with the reader individually depending on his needs. A good reader can listen to the music while reading. Problematic readers can listen to an audio file and follow the text. Using headphones prevents students from disturbing each other. Everyone can work on its own tempo.
Sony Reader has all technical features that make it best choice for classrooms. It has long life battery, and what is more it has no wireless device. It prevents students from browsing the Internet during lessons. The price $200 for PRS-600 is reasonable and affordable for all users.

Turn Your Wall into Interactive White Board
The Interactive White Boards (IWBs) are devices that gain more and more popularity in education and business structures. They are easy to use in classes and during the business meetings. Interactive Boards help to process and understand information more quickly. The Epson announced a release of a new project in the IWB market this year. They introduced a new Interactive White Board Module IU-01. This module is a new solution of add on devices. IU-01 Module can transform any wall or projection surface into an interactive white board. Epson’s module can be used with any computer or any video projector. The trademark of this Module will be Epson BrightLink Solo Interactive Module.
The BrightLink Solo Interactive Module works as a computer or projector add on device and can turn any wall or projection screen into an interactive surface. The device is easy to use and very easy transportable. When the device is used, the particular wall or projection screen is turned into a touch screen. The computer can be controlled by touching the wall with special pen (stylus). Technological principals are similar to WiiMote Whiteboard. Many similar projects can be found on the Internet as DIY interactive white boards. Many tips for making low budget white board can be found.
This is a perfect solution which is supposed to bring new waves into IWBs market. Unfortunately, Epson did not release any specifications for upcoming product. This leads to various discussions and guesses. Despite that, all information and discussions about this new product are positive. It seems that the only disadvantage of BrightLink Solo will be the lack of interactive presentation creation software. Epson has a lot of experience in creating cheap and easy to use products oriented to education and presentations. It is believed that this product will be oriented to the same market.

Every academic institution realizes that direct instruction is an important component in developing students’ vocabulary. There are a host of online resources available for teachers to increase the effectiveness of imparting instruction on vocabulary development in a visual and interactive way.
Visual Instruction on Vocabulary Development
Visuwords is an online graphical dictionary that uses Princeton University’s open source database, WordNet. You can search words and find their meanings plus associated words in a diagrammatic manner. When you enter a word in the search bar, a network of nodes, comprising meaning, adjectives, and other connections, gets formed.
Wordle is an online Google App tool for creating word clouds from the text entered by a student. Wordle analyses the text and presents it in a visual manner, laying more emphasis on the words that occur more frequently in the provided text. Wordle allows students to modify the fonts, layout and color theme as they like.
Technical Instruction on Practicing Vocabulary
Easy access to online resources has allowed educators to take imparting instruction on vocabulary to the next level. WordSteps is a tool that provides vocabulary enrichment in eleven different languages. It offers to create a vocabulary list and generate a series of activities to practice the words. Vocabulix offers online vocabulary lessons in Spanish and German. The resource’s social networking option allows students to practice using the language in a real, social setting.
Vocab Sushi is the ideal tool for students looking to prepare for exams like SAT or GRE, in a fun and interactive manner. It is also apt for anyone wanting to enhance their vocabulary and communicate better. Conceived by an SAT tutor, Vocab Sushi provides learning by enabling deeper understanding of words rather than by memorizing them.
The easy availability of technological resources has made imparting instruction on vocabulary more interesting for educators, and learning more effective and fun for students, resulting in better quality education with the aid of technology.

There are many manufacturers on the market that provide huge variety of Interactive White Boards (IWBs). The IWBs are new technological devices that can be used in education or business conferences. Basically, an IWB is a device that can project an image on large surface. The image or technically speaking the display has a touch screen option, so the computer can be controlled by hand. The main advantage of the IWB is that audience can interact with the information on the board.
There are low cost IWBs on the market but despite that, not every consumer can afford it. The consumers that are very curious can find many low cost DIY tips or projects that allow making IWB on an extremely small budget. There is a group of projects that explains how to make an IWB using the remote control from Nintendo game system. This project is approximately $100 cost.
The parts you need to make an IWB are following: 2 WiiMote remote controls, infrared pen or wand, Bluetooth capable laptop or desktop computer and, of course, the WiiMote whiteboard software. All parts that are needed can be bought in local electronics shops or on the Internet. WiiMote whiteboard software is free to download. It is possible to download the product from the Internet. In case free software does not fit your needs, SmoothBoard software can be purchased for $30. This solution depends on individual needs.
There are many videos that explain IWB’s installation and usage procedures step by step. Every user that is familiar with computer can handle such a challenge. The main thing needed to finish WiiMote board challenge is not the money or technical background but self confidence. On the other hand it is fun to make and try DIY interactive white board. Maybe it is a little bit geek, but such projects give deeper knowledge about new technologies.

The gradual increase in the use of PowerPoint presentations has led to the enrichment of classroom education tools. However, it is imperative for educators to ensure it does not turn into a hindrance to teaching.
PowerPoint and its Proper Usage
PowerPoint presentations can be one of the most effective tools of learning and instruction. Complementing visual charts, graphs, maps and other teaching aids, present mental signposts to students to recall learned material.
Presentations prepared by students should also be encouraged, since they facilitate creativity and use of technology by students themselves. They must also be persuaded to build on their technological proficiency, eventually helping them chart their career graphs.
PowerPoint and its Misuse
In several cases, PowerPoint presentations have proved to be a detriment to instruction, rather than an aid. They have depersonalized education and limited student interaction. Teachers have been frequently known to not revise goals of instruction, despite reforms in curriculum and changes in course objectives.
Teachers have also been found to use PowerPoint to put forward their notes and studies, rather than discuss them and make classes more interactive. Not using PowerPoint as an outline to the topic, they have been using it as a convenient substitute to impart instruction.
With such misuse of the tool, much teaching time is wasted, interactive and substantial deliberations obliterated. In such scenarios, the dimmed lights for an ongoing presentation only imply light-hearted exchanges among students, rather than serious education.
It is important that PowerPoint does not become an alternate to classroom teaching methods, but continues to support existing educational methods.
While PowerPoint presentations can make learning more enriching, teachers must be careful they do not allow it to turn into a mundane means of interaction. Alternating the use of the tool with LCD projectors, Smart Boards, video and DVD, as per availability, helps maintaining association of enjoyment with learning.

PowerPoint presentations are known to be an effective method of imparting education. They make teaching both interactive and enjoyable by offering display notes, video, audio and images.
However, if not used properly, they can become a hindrance to teaching rather than an aid. It is not difficult for PowerPoint presentations to turn into lectures rather than interactive sessions.
The Internet offers a wide range of tutorials on how to make effective presentations.
Drawing Tools for Effective Introductions
PowerPoint provides the use of drawing tools that enable you to introduce your topic through a picture and make your lesson very interactive. By going to the View menu, one can select Toolbars, and then Drawing Toolbar. Once the Drawing Toolbar appears at the bottom of the screen, one can experiment with various shapes and positions of these shapes. By right-clicking on any of the shapes, the Custom Animation tool can be selected. This allows for a variety of effects to be added to the creation.
Using the Pen for Presentation Notes
An interesting tool for making notes on an ongoing presentation, the Pen tool in PowerPoint can be used only while viewing the actual Slide Show. In View mode, one needs to hit Control + P, opening the Pen. One can use the mouse to draw or write. On exiting, the notes or drawings can be saved.
Text Boxes for Interactive Presentations
Students can set up Text Boxes and type information in them, making PowerPoint presentations more interactive. By going to the View menu and setting up the Control Toolbox, one can click on the Textbox button, and create as many textboxes as desired. This tool can only be used while viewing the Slide Show.
Conclusion
PowerPoint is a tool that can make learning more meaningful and education a much more engaging experience. It lies upon the teacher to realize the potential of this wonderful resource.

With the increase in integration of technological aids in classrooms, the implementation of Smart Boards is also rising. The topmost reason for this is the interactivity of its applications that enables complete student involvement, thereby enriching the learning process. Hence, teachers find this kind of a latest educational technology really useful.
The Smart Board is part of an interactive whiteboard that also comprises an interactive board, computer with notebook program and a projector. Initially developed for businesses, these systems have entered the educational circle, helping learning advance with the progress in technology. Due to the undue advantages provided by the Smart Board, students can study in a more interactive way.
Benefits of Using a Whiteboard
A Whiteboard provides support for instruction to special students, as it can adapt to a variety of learning styles. It offers learning experiences through each of the senses to learners with various kinds of impairments.
A Smart Board is also useful in classrooms with a single computer. It becomes the tool for manifesting information, giving students an interactive learning atmosphere.
However, not all classrooms are able to take advantage of this system, often due to tight budgets.
Whiteboards as Tools of Professional Development
Following a basic level of assessment, teachers are required to chart the professional development plan of their students. Addressing the strengths and weaknesses of the students, this plan can be demonstrated very well through the use of whiteboards. Different from a formal, written document, a whiteboard representation of a professional development plan can be both comprehensive and constructive.
Smart Board and its Implementation
If well-implemented, the Smart Boards can certainly become a method of teaching that is educative, while it is exciting mainly for both teachers and students. Encompassing the wide range of Web 2.0 tools, this system makes use of the best online tools and technologies to give education a whole new outlook.

Classrooms and businesses across the globe are gradually increasing the use of Smart Boards and other interactive whiteboards (IWBs). Opening vistas of opportunity for educators, whiteboards, with their large, sensitive touch-screens, promise an educative and interactive medium of communication with students and clients. Growing in popularity is the Smart Board model 680 (SB680) that has a 77-inch diagonal IWB and is priced at $1000. Using the room’s existing video projector, it transforms into an interactive tool for media presentation.
Installing the SB680
The SB680 has a mounting bracket at the back that fits into the cork hanging strip with metal edges of whiteboards in many schools. This is an easy and convenient method of mounting the Smart Board.
Once mounted, the board is connected to the computer with the help of a long USB cable. Special installations can be dealt with by using special active USB extension cables and add-on Bluetooth connection kits. The process of installation also requires the 700MB download data of the Notebook Essential resources.
Installing Drivers and Using Touch
The Smart Board becomes a perfectly working device once the drivers are installed. Use of its stylus pens adds to the precision of the touch recognition. For a new user, it is easy to remember to use the stylus pen carefully, and not as one would on paper, as well as use only the tip when using one’s finger, for accuracy.
Powering your SB680
An integral component of the entire setup is the software that accompanies the device, making the Smart Board fast and user-friendly. The range of software-based tools is wide and covers almost every possible requirement of a user.
With the SB680, educators and any other presenters can smoothly integrate quizzes, games, images or any other items to enhance their presentation.
Though priced rather steep, the SB680 is definitely worth its cost, if used effectively in a classroom or company.

Among the growing popularity of interactive whiteboards (IWBs) is a brand that is clearly emerging as distinct from the competition ” the Promethean ActivBoard.
Let us take a look at the positive feedback as well as the drawbacks of this product.
What is the Promethean ActivBoard?
As in the case of other IWBs, the ActivBoard also allows user interaction by means of a huge touch screen exterior. A stylus pen enables accurate response when sensed by the board’s magnetic wires. What sets the ActivBoard apart is its greater accuracy and accurate control of the pointer.
Part of the system that comprises a computer and a video projector, the ActivBoard is where the image on the computer is cast by the projector.
Advantages of ActivBoard
- It contains a multitude of lessons and activities that can be used in a wide range of classrooms and applications.
- It is resistant to damage due to its durable structure.
- In the model ActivBoard+2, the height of the board can be adjusted, enabling students of all heights to use the device.
-The ActivStudio is compatible with other such Promethean items, such as ActiVotes, a student response system.
- It has an easy process of setup and installation of the ActivPen, resulting in high accuracy of the touch recognition system.
Drawbacks of ActivBoard
- The board does not respond to the touch of fingers and it can only be controlled with an ActivPen stylus or ActivSlate.
- It is priced rather steep.

Amid the growing brands of IWBs, the ActivBoard stands apart due to its durable structure and ease of setup and use. Moreover, it is powerful software that actually drives it. With the capability of making studying more enriching, the Promethean ActivBoard is an amazing and useful product to be used for both schools and board rooms.

The development of new technologies rate is increasing very rapidly. New technologies are adopted not only in science labs, or science fiction movies. There are various range of new technologies developed that can be used in daily life, school classrooms or business meetings. These new technologies can increase quality of a lecture, meeting or conference. “SmatBoard” or, generally speaking, Interactive White Board (IWB) can be used for all those purposes.
Get rid of your regular white board.
An Interactive White Board, in fact, is a large touch sensitive display that can be used to control computer by hand. IWB can be used to demonstrate videos, slides or documents. It also can be used as a regular white board to write formulas or draw graphics. There are several well know Interactive White Boards manufacturers. In the USA, SmartBoards are manufactured by Smart Technologies Inc. and in Europe they are made by Prometean Technologies. Smartboard is a trade mark of Smart Technologies Inc., so other companies call them simply IWB.
Interactive White boards are perfect solution in classrooms or business meetings. Audience can interact with the information on screen. This is the main advantage comparing IWB to standard multimedia devices. SmartBoards allow providing wide range of information more effectively. Also the smart board can save the information that was written. Information is saved as an image, so the copies of the lecture or meeting information can be sent via email very easily. This feature makes IWB a very powerful tool of information processing and sharing. The most important thing is that every consumer can find a SmartBoard available even for a small budget and can be used in rooms that have lack of space for a standard white board. Also IWBs are easily transportable, so the meeting can be held in the room you like the most. The only requirement for that is electricity.
